Gunmen mock Mindanao martial law, kill soldier, village councilor in Cotabato City

COTABATO CITY – Police here are hunting down the gunmen who shot dead a soldier and a North Cotabato village councilman in separate attacks  here on Monday (Sept. 2).

Maj. Rustom Pastolero, head of Cotabato City police station 2, said soldier Sgt. Mike Elumba was off duty and driving his motorcycle along a road at the village of Rosary Heights Mother when a gunman aboard another motorcycle fired at him from behind.

Elumba, a Scout Ranger, died on the way to the hospital due to multiple gunshot wounds.

On the same day around 9 p.m., a resident of the same village was was gunned down by motorcycle assassins as he and his wife were just walking.

Baser Salim Adam suffered multiple gunshot wounds from a .45 caliber pistol. He died in the hospital. Police said the attack on Adam could be part of a rido, or clan war. His wife was spared. Edwin Fernandez/tsb
