MANILA, Philippines – The family of rape and murder convict and former Calauan, Laguna Mayor Antonio Sanchez on Tuesday showed up at the Senate for the resumption of the probe into the controversy surrounding the possible release of their patriarch.

The Senate Justice and Human Rights committee, chaired by Senator Richard Gordon, is looking into the implementation of Republic Act 10592 which increased the number of days to be credited to good conduct time allowance (GCTA).
The former mayor’s wife, Elvira and her children, Calauan Councilor Ave Marie Sanchez-Alcid, former Calauan Councilor Allan Antonio, Anthony and Marie Antonelvie arrived at the Senate 20 minutes before the scheduled 10 a.m. hearing.
Allan earlier claimed that Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Nicanor Faeldon assured the family that the former mayor would be released under the GCTA law.
The family also said that a release order for their patriarch dated August 20 has already been issued.
But while Faeldon admitted to meeting the family, he said “there was never an assurance” that Sanchez would be released. /gsg
