MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte is not thinking of firing Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Nicanor Faeldon and other officials of the national penitentiary yet, Malacañang said Tuesday, following the controversy on the release of heinous crime convicts.
“As regards the officials in the Bureau of Corrections, the President will maintain the status quo until the Congressional hearings are concluded,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement.
“He will be monitoring the conduct of the legislative investigation and give appropriate consideration to the findings of Congress,” Panelo added.
The Senate on Monday started its probe into Republic Act 10592 or the Good Conduct Time Allowance law, which was the basis for the release of high-profile inmates, including those convicted of rape and murder.
Calls have mounted for the resignation or sacking of Faeldon after he was questioned on the release of nearly 2,000 heinous crime convicts on the basis of good behavior. /gsg
