MANILA, Philippines — The low pressure area located east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur has intensified into a tropical depression, bearing the local name of “Liwayway,” the weather bureau said on Sunday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that Liwayway became a tropical depression around 10 a.m.

Liwayway is also “less likely” to make landfall in the country but Pagasa said that it would continue to monitor the weather system’s track.

Pagasa said that Liwayway will bring scattered light to moderate rains with at times heavy rain showers over Caraga and Davao Region within the day.

It added that residents of the said areas should prepare for possible landslides and flashfloods caused by the weather disturbance.

Pagasa also urged the public to coordinate with their local disaster risk reduction and management offices with regards to Liwayway.

Liwayway was last spotted 405 kilometers East Northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur. It had a maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph.

It is moving northwest at 20 kph and is forecasted to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Thursday morning. /je
