MANILA, Philippines- Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III urged President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday to revamp the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).
“PRRD (President Rodrigo Roa Duterte) must revamp the entire officialdom of the BuCor. This travesty of Justice is condemnable!” Sotto said in a Twitter post.
BuCor has been making headlines after the reported early release of inmates with heinous crimes due to good behavior supposedly based on the law that raised the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) given to inmates.
Among those allegedly ordered released was former Calauan, Laguna mayor Antonio Sanchez, who was convicted for the brutal killings of two University of the Philippines students in the 1990s.
Sanchez’s release order was reportedly signed by BuCor Director General Nicanor Faeldon, who earlier denied it.
“Bakit lahat ng malipatan nitong official na ito may iskandalo? Saan Kaya sya sunod ililipat?” Sotto added in his Twitter post without naming the official.
Faeldon was at the helm of the Bureau of Customs when his name was dragged into the alleged smuggling of P6.4 billion worth of shabu.
He resigned from his post but was later appointed deputy administrator III at the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).
In October 2018, Faeldon was appointed to lead the BuCor. /muf
