MANILA, Philippines – The once trash-strewn Estero de Binondo in Manila is now a picture of beauty and improvement with cleaner environs and waters largely due to the efforts of Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC).

In a Facebook post on Thursday, PRRC displayed photos of the cleaner creek reflecting the blue skies.

The PRRC said that it cultivated plants along the riverbanks to help filter water.

“The plants along its riverbanks, installed by the PRRC, aim to improve the estero’s water quality through phytoremediation which is the use of plants like Bandera Espanola, Vetiver, and Heliconia which are scientifically-proven to absorb pollutants and heavy metals to naturally filter the water,” PRRC said.

The PRRC also assured the public that it will conduct daily cleanup activities to maintain Estero de Binondo’s cleanliness.

PRRC’s River Warriors under PRRC Executive Director Jose Antonio Goitia will lead the cleanup drive. /gsg
