MANILA, Philippines — Upsilon Sigma Phi and Sigma Delta Phi both expressed rage over the possible release of convicted rapist and murderer Antonio Sanchez, former Calauan town mayor, barely 26 years after the gruesome rape-slay of University of the Philippines-Los Baños student Eileen Sarmenta and the murder of her companion Allan Gomez.

Here is the content of the joint statement dated August 26.

We, the members of Upsilon Sigma Phi and Sigma Delta Phi, express strong indignation and dismay over the possible release of former Calauan Mayor Antonio Sanchez based on Republic Act 10592.

FEATURED STORIES

While we applaud the swift action and response of Malacañang and the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) for rectifying the initial misinterpretation of the law and assuring the public that Sanchez will continue to serve his sentences we still demand that:

(1) the BuCor fully and publicly render a full account of Sanchez’ whereabouts, given the information and photos circulating online, showing that he is already in Calauan or that he was able to celebrate his birthday with his family without proper leave of court;

(2) Antonio Sanchez be stripped of all special privileges being accorded to him inside the New Bilibid Prison;

(3) Indemnity be finally given to the families of the victims, as ordered by the court;

(4) the Government continues to uphold the rule of law and justice for all.

No convicted criminal deserves to walk our streets freely on a dubious and unsubstantiated finding of “good behavior”. The loss of Sis Eileen and Brod Allan remains fresh in the memories of their loved ones, despite the conviction of Sanchez to seven (7) life sentences. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of Sis Eileen and Brod Allan in these difficult times, when wounds are being reopened.

The Fraternity and Sorority will not stand idly by and will continue to fight against making a mockery of our justice system, with the inclusion of Sanchez in the application of this law which is well-intended but is being unfairly used to favor powerful individuals like Sanchez.
