Airport personnel caught using smartphones while on duty

MANILA, Philippines – Another set of government employees at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) Terminal 2 was caught using their smartphones while on official duty.

Several video clips sent by Civil Service Commission (CSC) Commissioner Aileen Lizada to reporters on Thursday showed Department of Agriculture (DA) and Department of Transportation (DOTr) personnel fidgeting with their gadgets for purposes not related to work.

“It appears may nag o-online shopping yung naka green,” Lizada said.  “‘Yung naka black jacket ‘di po clear. ‘Yong guy in black jacket, he dimmed his screen para ‘di obvious.”

According to her, the two persons wearing a black jacket were from DA, and the woman with a green uniform was working for DOTr.

“‘Yon hong babae na naka-black jacket, naka-saksak pa ho ‘yong unit niya doon sa electricity ng counter, so try to imagine they’re being paid to do official work, but what they’re doing is personal stuff, and courtesy pa ho ng gobyerno ‘yong charging ng kanilang cellphone,” Lizada noted.

“Ito ho ay bawal, dapat po kapag nagtatrabaho tayo we can use the cellphone as long it is office-related or work-related, ‘wag lang po personal use,” she explained.

Lizada said that she has already relayed the information to DOTr officials.  The department meanwhile said that they are looking into the said issue.

Last April, a similar incident happened where government employees from the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) and the Quarantine Services were caught either playing games or watching shows on their phone while on active duty.

This occurred when airports and major transportation hubs were on high alert because of the high number of passengers brought by the Holy Week holiday.

Employees, especially front desk officers, were again reminded that their attention has to be focused on attending to queries of passengers.

“How can they serve kapag lahat sila ay naka-yuko?  How can they observe and watch and see what they are supposed to do?  Bawal ho ‘yon dapat po full attention sila,” Lizada said. /je
