MANILA, Philippines — Teachers should be spared of excessive reports and homework, too.

This was the stance of Basilan Rep. Mujiv Hataman in the wake of proposals filed in Congress for a no-homework policy from kindergarten to high school.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones earlier said she backs the proposed no homework policy for students but Hataman said the Department of Education (DepEd) should first address the hill of clerical work and reports that teachers take home.

“Siguro ito din dapat ang repasuhin: kung tama ba ang dami ng reports na pinapagawa sa kanila. Tingnan kung sagabal na ang mga ito sa pagtuturo. How can teachers teach when a great deal of their time is devoted to preparing too many reports too often?” the Deputy Speaker pointed out in a statement.

While reports and other paperwork may be necessary, the former ARMM governor said these extra works that burden teachers could be streamlined.

“Tandaan din natin na ang mga guro ang main workforce sa mga community activities. Sa mga piyesta at lahat ng holiday celebration, sila ang inaasahan. At ito ay unpaid work, for the love of community na lang,” Hataman noted.

Sorsogon 1st District Rep. Evelina Escudero has filed House Bill Nos. 3611 proposing a no-homework policy from kindergarten to high school while Quezon City 5th District Rep. Alfred Vargas and Senator Grace Poe both filed bills that seek to only ban homework for the weekend. /kga
