Quake rocks Philippines, Taiwan

MANILA, Philippines—Earthquakes shook northern Philippines and Taiwan on Sunday afternoon, but there were no reports of damage or casualties.

The 6.1-magnitude tremor that struck off northern Luzon at 4:26 p.m. also shook Manila and northern provinces.

No tsunami warning was raised, but aftershocks were expected, government volcanologists said.

The Luzon quake, centered 122 kilometers northeast of Laoag City, was at a depth of 39 km.

“It’s quite big, so we are calling and checking on islands in the north, but there are no reports of damage yet,” Ismael Narag, officer in charge of the seismology department at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, told Reuters.

Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau said the earthquake hit Taiwan at 4 p.m. and was centered 45 km from Taitung county. It registered at magnitude 5.9. Kay Alave with reports from Reuters and Agence France-Presse
