Village exec dead, priest wounded in Laguna shooting
SAN PEDRO CITY, Laguna, Philippines — A village councilor died while a priest was wounded in a gun attack in San Pablo City in Laguna province on Monday night, police said.
Lt. Col. Eliseo Bernales, San Pablo City police chief, said Richard Galit, a council member of Barangay 3-D, died while undergoing surgery in a hospital in San Pablo.
Police said Galit, 36, appeared to be the primary target of the attack.
Galit was driving his Toyota Fortuner on Shatelig Avenue when gunmen on a motorcycle shot him when he slowed down at an intersection.
Catholic priest Mil Larano, whose car was tailing Galit’s, was hit by a stray bullet.
Police said Larano was already in a stable condition. —Maricar Cinco
Outstanding citizens of Quezon hailed
LUCENA CITY, Quezon, Philippines — The commander of Metro Manila’s police force led this year’s recipients of the Quezon Medalya ng Karangalan (QMK), an award given to outstanding citizens of Quezon province.
“We’re only doing our best in our chosen fields,” Maj. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, director of the National Capital Region Police Office, said in his speech on behalf of the awardees during the ceremony held here on Aug. 19, the birth anniversary of the late former President Manuel Quezon.
Gov. Danilo Suarez and lawyer Vicente Joyas, head of the QMK awards committee, handed the awards to Eleazar of Tagkawayan town for government service; Edelissa Ramos of Candelaria town (agriculture); Lloyd Luna of Gumaca (literature); Azucena Romulo of Lucena City (education); Hamilton Villapando of Gumaca (education); Genoveva Verdaguer of Lucena City (education); and Joyde la Peña Talens of Sariaya town (education and research). —Delfin T.
