‘All gender restrooms’ being set up in seaport terminals — PPA

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) on Tuesday said it is setting up “all gender restrooms” in its seaport terminals and offices in the country in a move to promote gender inclusivity.

PPA General Manager Jay Daniel R. Santiago said the “all gender restrooms” in its seaports and offices will be completed not later than the end of August.

“The plan is to incorporate the gender-neutral restrooms to the existing facilities dedicated to differently-abled persons.” Santiago said in a statement.

“The facility, which can accommodate one person at a time, can be used by anyone, regardless of gender… PPA recognizes the needs of all our port users and the agency will continue to adopt policies in order to bring comfort to the lives of the sea-going public regardless of gender preference or expression,” he added.

Santiago clarified, however, that persons with disability should still be given priority in using the said restrooms.

The ports authority general manager prided its office’s goal of developing “an environment of sensitivity and inclusivity for our personnel and our port users.”

Santiago said its goals are not only reflected on the “all gender restrooms” but in their organisational structure as well since employees are given equal opportunities regardless of their gender.

“Members of the LGBTQ+ community have likewise been given a chance to compete in positions they are most qualified and competent to perform,” the PPA said. /je
