Today, Aug. 16, is the 108th death anniversary of Teodora Alonzo, mother of national hero Jose Rizal. Born on Nov. 9, 1827, Alonzo came from a distinguished family in Laguna province and was educated at Colegio de Sta. Rosa in Manila. She also suffered persecution at the hands of the Spanish government which imprisoned her twice. When her son was sentenced to death, she appealed to the governor-general to no avail. She died in 1911 at their house in Binondo, Manila. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
