100,000 voters list up in a week

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said on Friday that more than 100,000 Filipinos registered to be included in the list of voters, one of the highest turnouts on record.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said a “good and huge” turnout of 100,399 applications have been filed in various offices.

The bulk of these were applications as regular voters, or those aged 18 and above, while only 8,007 were Sangguniang Kabataan voters.

“We still have a lot of voters who follow the rhythm of the elections—if it would be held or not. A lot of people wait until it is necessary before they actually register,” Jimenez said.

Of all regions, Calabarzon so far has the highest number of applicants at 19,651. Central Visayas, on the other hand, recorded the most number of youth applicants at 1,043.

In terms of gender, women applicants outnumbered men by 11,551. The poll body will accept applications from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays to Saturdays, including holidays, until Sept. 30.—JOVIC YEE
