MANILA, Philippines—Two suspects had been arrested in the theft of cable wires used for grounding along the tracks of Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3).

They were identified as Allan Garcia, 38, and Jose Llaneta, 43. They were suspected of stealing a 10-meter long cable along the MRT-3 tracks at the train line’s Shaw Boulevard and Boni stations, according to the MRT-3 management.

Security guards caught the suspects carrying a sack with the cable in it as they tried to flee. The guards opened the sack and saw its contents—cable, pliers, hacksaw, wood saw, cutter and different wrenches.

The cable is being used to protect against electric shocks. The theft of 10 meters of the cable, however, would not have any effect on operations, according to MRT-3 management.

Michael Capati, MRT-3 director for operations, said the suspects would be charged to serve as a warning to others.

MRT-3 management also said it would tighten security to prevent trespassing and theft of materials.

The suspects are now in custody of the Mandaluyong police./TSB
