MANILA, Philippines — Two separate earthquakes rocked Davao Occidental and Northern Samar early Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
A 5.6-magnitude quake first struck the Davao Occidental municipality of Jose Abad Santos in Mindanao. at 12:10 a.m.
Past an hour later, a 5.0-magnitude tremor was felt at the Northern Samar municipality of Pambujan.
Both quakes were of tectonic origin, Phivolcs said.
The two quakes were also felt at various intensities:
Northern Samar
Reported Intensity III – Virac, Catanduanes
Reported Intensity II – Legazpi City; Sorsogon City
Instrumental Intensity I – Daet, Camarines Norte; Pili, Camarines Sur; Borongan City; Cebu City
Davao Occidental
Instrumental Intensity III – Alabel and Kiamba, Sarangani; General Santos City
Instrumental Intensity II – Tupi, South Cotabato
Residents in the affected areas have been warned by Phivolcs to expect aftershocks.
Phivolcs however said no damages are to expected in both quakes. /muf
