Maid sued for qualified theft

MANILA, Philippines — A couple in Las Piñas City filed a charge of qualified theft against a 17-year-old maid for allegedly stealing P2 million worth of valuables and documents at their home.

Melanie and Raymond Vergel de Dios, arrived at their home on Monday 4 p.m. also to find their 1-year-old child missing, besides their valuables in disarray.

They also found their safe — containing jewelry, cash in dollars and pesos, credit cards, a condominium title and other documents — busted open, which prompted them to report to the police.

But according to the maid, she got a call from someone who sounded like Melanie Vergel de Dios, who then told  her that she was in police custody after being involved in a vehicular accident and instructed her to bring the cash and valuables to a person waiting outside Puregold Bacoor in Cavite.

According to a report submitted to Col. Simnar Gran, Las Piñas police chief, the couple was able to contact the maid, who said she was on her way home from Bacoor with the infant.

The maid denied she was in cahoots with the people who contacted her. Nevertheless the couple filed a complaint against her.
