4 village chiefs, 43 others nabbed for illegal gambling in Abra

BAGUIO CITY—Police arrested four village chairmen, a village councilor, and 42 others for playing ‘dado,’ an illegal dice betting game, inside a cockpit arena at Ubbog-Lipcan village in Bangued town, Abra on Tuesday afternoon.

Police identified the Bangued village heads as Amado Briones Acosta, 58, of Zone 2 village; Carmelo Briones Acosta, 63, of Zone 1; and Alberto Barras Bigornia, 52, of Zone 7.

The two Acostas are brothers of Bangued Vice Mayor Mila Acosta-Valera.

Also facing illegal gambling charges is village chairman Rodel Utlang Gavanes, 44, of Cabcaburao, San Juan town, also in Abra.

Also arrested was Bangued village councilor Mark Viernes Bandayrel, 27, of Zone 5.

Policemen seized P14,650 cash bets, dices, table, chips, clay pot, and other gambling paraphernalia.

‘Dado’ uses a pair of dice where bets are placed on the combinations of black and red.

Police Maj. Grace Marron, spokesperson of the Abra police, said the illegal gambling operations are conducted every Tuesday and Thursday inside the cockpit arena. Karlston Lapniten /lzb
