The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) was formally organized through the National Defense Act or Commonwealth Act No. 1, which was approved on Dec. 21, 1935. Originally created as the Philippine Army, it was given its current name by then President Manuel L. Quezon. At present, the AFP, with its headquarters in Quezon City, is composed of the Philippine Army, Philippine Air Force and Philippine Navy.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
