Customs to revoke accreditation of brokers charging illegal fees

MANILA, Philippines – Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo on Wednesday said his agency would revoke Customs accreditations of brokers charging importers with “unauthorized and illegal” fees.

“The Bureau has initiated reforms in our systems to improve efficiency, promote transparency and remove opportunities to commit graft,” Guerrero said in a statement.

According to Guerrero, even President Rodrigo Duterte expressed his displeasure over “unscrupulous customs brokers” and that cases should be filed against them.

Duterte likewise said that he wanted to revoke the brokers’ accreditations and licenses if proven that they are involved into any illegal activities in the bureau, Guerrero said.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Ombudsman has already ordered an investigation against the officials and employees of the Bureau of Customs over their alleged involvement in graft and corrupt practices./ac
