MANILA, Philippines — Manila Mayor Isko Moreno said on Wednesday that the previous administration in Manila may be held liable for the current situation at Vitas Slaughterhouse in Tondo, Manila.

Moreno said that Vitas Slaughterhouse shutdown its operations during the term of former Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada about two years ago.

While he said that “past is past,” Moreno said that the current city government would investigate the issue on the slaughterhouse, from which he described as “dugyot.”

“Past is past but if you have liability administratively and [criminally], you will be held liable. Let the natural [course] of law.. batas is batas,” Moreno said.

He also clarified by what he meant by his statement “past is past” saying this means that the local government of Manila should accept the current situation of Vitas Slaughterhouse and use this experience in finding ways to improve the area.

“So yung past is past is moving forward. Tanggapin natin, wag natin ikukubli yung katayuan o suliranin o problema dahil doon magsisimula ang pagbibigay ng solution. Yung pagtanggap sa tunay na katayuan ng lungsod ng Maynila,” he added.

Under the plan of the Moreno administration, four buildings will be constructed within the same area of the slaughterhouse for public use and also to accomodate animals.

He said that the opening of the new Vitas Slaughterhouse is set to happen next year. /jpv
