Today, July 11, is the 20th death anniversary of Marcelo Briones Fernan, the 19th chief justice of the Supreme Court.
Born on Oct. 24, 1927, he became chief justice in 1988. He resigned in 1992 and was elected as senator in 1995.
At the opening of the 11th Congress in 1998, he was elected Senate President.
Fernan resigned from his position on June 28, 1999 due to health complications and passed away days later.
He was the only Filipino to head both the judiciary and legislative branches, as Chief Justice and as Senate President.
