Leni Robredo

MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Leni Robredo said on Sunday that the death of a 3-year-old girl during an alleged buy-bust operation should serve as a wake-up call in the government’s bloody war on drugs.

“So many children have been killed, either due to mistaken identity, or they were caught in the crossfire,” Robredo said in her weekly radio show. “But the question is: With all these deaths, what have we been doing?”

“We cannot just dismiss it and say that these things happen,” she added.

Robredo’s remarks were in response to former police chief, now Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, who said that “shit happens” when asked about the death of Myka Ulpina.

The young girl was shot dead along with her father who reportedly used her as a human shield when the police tried to arrest him for drugs in Rizal province last month.

“You cannot say that [there are] casualties because accidents happen. It happens because [lawmen] are not doing their job well,” Robredo said.
