MANILA, Philippines – The red lightning alert raised at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) has been lowered to yellow alert, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) on Sunday raised the red lightning alert around 12:41 p.m. but was immediately lifted and lowered to yellow lightning alert less than 15 minutes later.
Under a red lightning alert, ramp movement for both aircraft and ground personnel are suspended.
“The alert is a safety measure taken to prevent any untoward incident from happening when lightnings are prevalent in the immediate area and may endanger personnel, passengers and even flight operations,” MIAA explained.
“A prolonged lightning red alert may cause delays in flight operations,” MIAA added.
But since the red lightning alert has been lowered to yellow, normal flight operations at Manila’s main gateway has returned to normal.
“We seek the understanding of the air riding public in this regard. Safety of passengers, flights and airport workers remain paramount in airport operations,” MIAA said. (Editor: Gilbert S. Gaviola)
