Isko Moreno: Manila Zoo to become a family-friendly park

MANILA, Philippines — Manila Zoo will not only become a family-friendly park but an environment- and student-friendly tourist spot, Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso said Thursday.

“It has to be environment-friendly […] We can enhance this in such a way that students on their regular classes will go here because they have to study biology,” he said, adding that new facilities will be introduced.

Manila Zoo was ordered closed indefinitely last January due to the issues found by the Department of Environment and Natural Resource (DENR).

Moreno said repackaging the 5.5-hectare zoo would make it friendly for families who have a lot of memories in the zoo.

With all the plans of the local government for the Zoo, Moreno stressed that it would not be sold.

“It will be run by the local government unit. No matter how we are going to modernize (it) to address the demands of our time with regard to our visitors,” he said.

According to Moreno, his government is not in a rush to reopen the zoo.

He stressed that it should first comply with the requirements set by the DENR before it could operate again. (Editor: Eden Estopace)
