An 83-year-old woman and her 51-year-old son were wounded when a man robbed them in their house in barangay Pasol, Alcoy town, southern Cebu.
Juanita Belga was stabbed seven times in the back while her son Francisco sustained stab wounds in the shoulders. The mother and son were recuperating in a Cebu City hospital.
The suspect, Jaylord Pingol, was arrested by police in his home in barangay Obong, Dalaguete, a neighboring town of Alcoy.
The victims told police that cash and jewelry were taken during the robbery.
Police said Pingol admitted stabbing the two victims but denied taking cash and jewelry from them.
The suspect said he was drunk during the incident.
Francisco, a farmer, told police that he was in the kitchen around 5 a.m. last Saturday when he heard his mother shouting “Ayaw ko patya! (Don’t kill me!)
Francisco ran to his mother’s room and saw Pingol stabbing his mother.
Francisco and Pingol grappled for the knife.
Franciso fell on the floor and was stabbed by Pingol, said police.
Francisco told police that Pingol took some cash and jewelry before he escaped.
Police conducted a hot pursuit operation and arrested Pingol around 7 a.m. in his house
PO1 Maribel Pardo of the Alcoy police said Pingol would usually go house to house to buy old jewelry.
Pardo said some neighbors were able to recognize Pingol’s voice when a commotion broke out in the Belgas’ house.
Police said Pingol’s shirt was still bloodied when he was arrested.
A knife and a screw driver were recovered from Pingol’s possession, said police.
Charges of robbery with frustrated homicide will be filed against the suspect.
Police said further investigation will be made to determine the amount of cash and jewelry that were allegedly taken in the robbery./CORRESPONDENT RHEA RUTH V. ROSELL
