TACLOBAN CITY – Tribu Maglalara of Basey ruled the 11th edition of the annual Sangyaw Festival Parade of Lights here Saturday night.
The inclement weekend weather did not stop thousands of residents and visitors from filling the streets to witness the city government – sponsored spectacle which saw the participation of 11 schools and barangays from Leyte and Samar.
The Sangyaw Festival Parade of Lights is a cultural event held every June 29 to pay homage to the city’s patron, Senior Santo Niño de Tacloban.
The city’s annual fiesta is celebrated every June 30.
The parade started at around 4 p.m. and ended at the Balyu-an Amphitheatre where the participants performed their dance numbers.
Police said an estimated 80,000 people witnessed the five-kilometer long parade.
Tribu Maglalara of Basey bagged the P500,000 top prize while Tribu Sinanjose of Barangay 83 and Manarabo Festival of Hinabangan town placed second and third and took home P300,000 and P100,000 respectively.
