MANILA, Philippines – Different officials and agencies from national and local government units have received citations from the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) for upholding the rights of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) community.
Among the individuals given recognition on Friday are Senator Risa Hontiveros, incoming Dinagat Island Governor Kaka Bag-ao, Bataan 1st District Geraldine Roman, and Quezon City Mayor-elect Joy Belmonte.
On the other hand, the government units recognized are the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), UP Center for Women and Gender Studies, Philippine Commission for the Urban Poor, Philippine Commission on Women, and local governments that passed and implemented anti-discrimination ordinances, like Mandaluyong City.
“In the recognition of government champions of the community, this Pride 2019, the Commission considers the government champion’s efforts advocating and advancing the rights of LGBTI communities in their respective offices or agencies,” CHR said.
The awards were given in celebration of pride month, which coincides with the month of June. CHR’s theme, “Celebrating and Resisting Together,” is an ode to this year’s pride march theme “Resist Together”, which is about working against stereotypes given to LGBTQIA+ individuals.
This year’s march would be held on June 29, Saturday, at the Marikina Sports Center in Marikina City. (Editor: Jonathan P. Vicente)
