Toy balloon disrupts train operations of MRT-3

MANILA, Philippines — Train operations of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) had been disrupted by a kiddie balloon shaped like a shark that got entangled with the overhead power lines on Wednesday afternoon.

The MRT-3 management said the balloon’s string somehow got entwined with the train system’s northbound contact wire and messenger wire while the “shark” itself was “snared” in between those two cables.

The incident happened at 3:46 p.m. between Kamuning and Quezon Avenue stations.

Train operations from both directions were halted for 35 minutes until the balloon was safely removed from the wires at 4:21 p.m.

The management reminded the public not to throw garbage near the stations so as “not to compromise the safety [of people] and disrupt train operations.”

“We apologize for the inconvenience the brief stoppage may have caused,” the MRT-3 management said in a statement. (Editor: Jonathan P. Vicente)
