WATCH: ‘Religious’ thief in Quezon caught on camera

MANILA, Philippines — After jumping off a grotto of the Virgin Mary, a still unidentified thief was caught on camera making the “sign of the cross” as he tried to steal from a house in Quezon province.

According to video uploader Jan Alvaro Lastimosa, the “religious thief” broke into family’s residence in Tayabas City, Quezon last June 23 at around 3 a.m.

The thief first climbed the fence of the house and sat on the grotto before jumping to the terrace and doing a quick “sign of the cross.”

“Sa pagsa-sign of the cross nya, tumalon po sya galing sa grotto ni Mama Mary kaya siguro sya nagkrus,” Lastimosa told INQUIRER.net in an interview.

Lastimosa said the thief broke the door to the kitchen, took a knife, and forcibly opened the door of the car owned by his brother, Kenee.

While successful in opening the window of the car, Lastimosa said there were nothing missing from inside the car. Nothing was also missing from inside the house as well.

“Wala po kaming ma-identify na nawawalang gamit sa bahay namin. Siguro pera at cellphone po ang habol kasi mag-isa lang sya. Di nya kayang tangayin yung mga appliances at iba pang gamit,” Lastimosa said.

The thief then left the scene, but not after making another “sign of the cross” before climbing the fence to escape.

Lastimosa said this was the third time that thieves have attempted to steal from the house.

A complaint has already been filed against the “religious” thief before the authorities in Tayabas City, but he remains at large of posting time.  (Editor: Mike U. Frialde)
