NBI ready to help cops probing slay of former Medellin, Cebu mayor

MANILA, Philippines — Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said Thursday that they will leave the investigation on the killing of former Medellin, Cebu town mayor Ricardo Ramirez, who was shot inside a hospital last Tuesday, to the local police.

But, Guevarra also said, the National Bureau of Investigation Regional Office 7 will always be ready to assist in the probe or the conduct of a separate inquiry “if necessary.”

Ramirez was killed inside the Bogo-Medellin Corporation Medical Center hospital reportedly by 15 unidentified armed men wearing bonnets.

The gunmen stormed the hospital Tuesday night, disarming a security guard and commanding a nurse to lead them to Ramirez’s room.

The suspects then disarmed a Bureau of Jail Management and Penology guard securing the former mayor. Ramirez was shot dead inside the comfort room of his private hospital room.

Ramirez was placed under hospital arrest. He was apprehended in 2017 for illegal possession of firearms. (Editor: Katherine G. Adraneda)
