MANILA, Philippines — Travellers may be in for a long wait as authorities raised a red lightning alert at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) late Thursday afternoon which might delay several flights.

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said a red lightning alert was issued 5:17 p.m. on the airport, temporarily suspending ramp movement for both aircraft and ramp personnel as a consequence.

A red lightning alert is raised when lightnings are prevalent in the area and may endanger personnel, passenger, and flight operations, Miaa explained. The state weather bureau issues such warning.

“The MIAA seeks the understanding of the air riding public for expected delays in flight operations. Safety of passengers, flight and airport workers remain paramount in airport operations,” the agency said.

The alert has been lifted before 6 p.m., but Miaa has not clarified yet if there will still be delays in flight schedules. (Editor: Katherine G. Adraneda)
