MANILA, Philippines — Opposition Senator Leila de Lima has expressed wish to adopt a cat named “Van” which was rescued after being brutally abused by its previous owner.
“Van” was rescued hours after a video of the cat being tied and dragged by a delivery truck in Quezon City went viral on social media.

De Lima has pleaded to be allowed to take care of the cat in her detention quarters inside Camp Crame.
“I wish to adopt “Van” and be allowed to take care of him here in my detention quarters, along with my other stray cats. Please,” De Lima said in a dispatch from Camp Crame.
The senator also lauded the security guard who cut the cat loose from the truck, as well as the volunteer group that rescued “Van.”
De Lima said she is supporting the group’s move to file appropriate charges against the cat’s abusers.
“I throw my full support to them in their intended filing of appropriate charges against the perpetrators pursuant to the Animal Welfare Act,” she said.
“Humans must learn to respect lesser and weaker creatures. No to cruelty to animals!,” De Lima added. (Editor: Mike U. Frialde)
