Lorenzana: Support gov’t initiatives to end armed conflict

MANILA, Philippines — On Independence Day, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana called on all Filipinos to support government’s efforts to end local armed conflict.

“Let us rally behind our government to end local communist armed conflict to eradicate the flaw of a foreign ideology that has inflicted division in our motherland for decades,” he said in a statement.

He also honored all soldiers, reservists and civilian volunteers for ensuring the safety and freedom of the nation.

“May we never forget the valiant sacrifices of our defenders and our veterans, who fought and protected our nation and people,” he said.

“We pay tribute to our soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, airwomen, reservists, and civilian volunteers who relentlessly guard our seas, lands, and air, and who tirelessly keep our communities safe,” he added.

Lorenzana asked Filipinos to help “safeguard the freedom that our ancestors fought for; the very freedom we have sworn to protect.”

Citizens’ role

Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Gen. Benjamin Madrigal Jr. also encouraged citizens to do their part to protect the country.

“Security, after all is a shared responsibility and the best way to repay the sacrifices of our national and modern heroes is to be responsible and active in protecting our freedom,” he said.

“We encourage every Filipino to actively participate in protecting our country and making our communities safe,” he said.

Madrigal said the AFP will continue to carry out its mandate and sworn duty to protect the country and its citizens. (Editor: Gilbert S. Gaviola)
