MANILA, Philippines — Google featured a special doodle of the Philippine flag on Wednesday in celebration of the country’s 121st Independence Day.
The moving doodle shows the Philippine flag fluttering against a blue sky.
“Google salutes the 121st Philippine Independence Day with a special doodle that features the Philippine flag,” Google said in a statement.
“On this day in 1898, the Philippines, an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands in the western Pacific Ocean named after Spanish King Philip II, finally claimed its freedom after over 300 years of colonial rule from Spain,” it added.
Google explained the symbolic meanings seen on the Philippine flag — from colors, stars, the eight rays of the sun.
“The Philippine flag itself is a powerful symbol of the independence movement, with each of its colors carrying a significant meaning: blue represents truth and justice, red symbolizes patriotism, and white stands for equality,” Google said.
“The three stars at the corner represent the three main regions of the Philippines – Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Meanwhile, the eight rays of the sun stand for the first eight provinces that went into battle against Spain,” it added.
Google said this is the tenth time that they celebrated the Independence Day with a specially-designed doodle.
In 2018, Google featured the country’s rich marine life while in 2017, Google featured a doodle of a sunrise over the sea with Filipinos paying respect to the Philippine flag.
