Salceda: Romualdez has ‘more than absolute majority’ for House Speaker race

MANILA, Philippines—Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez has “more than absolute majority” for the Speakership race, a ranking lawmaker from the House of Representatives bared Tuesday.

“We have more than (the) absolute majority,” Albay 2nd District Rep. Joey Salceda told reporters.

Salceda, however, refused to expound on his remark.

Romualdez was among the leading bets for the top post in the House of Representatives, which is set to be vacated by former President and outgoing Pampanga Rep. Gloria Arroyo.

Romualdez and Salceda are both members of the Lakas-CMD party.

The Albay solon also claimed that having Romualdez as House Speaker will be “good for the economy.”

“It’s good for the economy. He’s not only a lawyer but he’s been with a lot of very successful firms,” Salceda said.

“He has a very distinguished career actually so we can mobilize that towards a House that is more reformist in terms of economic policy. I see him to be at the forefront of major structural economic reforms,” he added.  (Editor: Mike U. Frialde)
