Twister destroys 10 houses in North Cotabato

A mango fell on a house when the twister hit Buayan village in the town of Mlang, North Cotabato on Sunday.

KIDAPAWAN CITY — A twister tore apart at least 10 houses made of light materials during a heavy downpour in Barangay Buayan, Mlang, North Cotabato on Monday.

The twister was brought about by the Intertropical Convergence Zone, a disaster official said.

Bernardo Tayong, municipal disaster risk reduction and management officer, said some banana and coconut trees were uprooted and hit the roofings of some of the damaged houses.

Tayong said it was fortunate that residents were out of their houses, tilling their rice fields when the incident happened.

“We should be thankful that no one was hurt,” Tayong said.

Of the 10 houses that were damaged, four were flattened by the twister.

“The roofing of these houses were blown and carried at least 20 meters away,” Tayong said.

The local government of Mlang pledged to give financial aid to affected families to have their damaged homes rebuilt, Tayong said. (Editor: Leti Z. Boniol)
