5 injured in Zamboanga bridge mishap

ZAMBOANGA CITY –– Five persons were critically injured when a fish carrier van turned turtle and landed off a bridge embankment in Barangay Manicahan of this city at dawn on Friday, June 7.

Police Captain Shellamae Chang, spokesperson of the Zamboanga City Police Office, said driver Ernesto Amante, of Barangay Talon-Talon this city, lost control of the steering wheel of the Mitsubishi canter elf as he was passing through the bridge past 3 a.m. on Friday.

“The fish carrier rolled over, rested on the parapet of the Manicahan bridge in an upside down position. The driver and four passengers sustained injuries in different parts of their bodies,” Chang said.

Manicahan bridge is located along the Maria Clara Lobregat National Highway and about 20 kilometers from the city center.

The injured passengers were identified as Elvin Book Amante, 19; Giobanne Bucay Gambia, 21; Salusteo Buak Dela Cruz, 40; and Bonifacio Salazar Romulo, 61.

Responders from the Police Station 3 rushed the five victims to Zamboanga City Medical Center.

The fish carrier truck came from Barangay Cawit along the west coast of this city and was loaded with assorted fish for delivery to Imelda town in Zamboanga Sibugay province. Julie Alipala (Editor: Leti Boniol)
