DAVAO CITY—Six mild earthquakes, all tectonic in origin, hit separate areas in Mindanao early Sunday, June 2, following the 5.4-magnitude quake that jolted Governor Generoso town in Davao Oriental on Saturday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivocs) said.
The first tremblor, a magnitude 4, struck at 1:14 a.m. some 64 kilometers southeast of Lingig town in Surigao del Sur, with a depth of focus of eight kilometers.
It was followed at 1:40 a.m. by a magnitude 1.9 quake some 38 kilometers northeast of Cateel, Davao Oriental, with a depth of focus of 23 kilometers.
At 3:25 a.m., a magnitude 2.2 quake followed in eight kilometers southeast of Montevista, Compostela Valley province, with a depth of focus of 30 kilometers.
Philvocs recorded another 2.6 quake quake at 8:10 a.m., with its epicenter located 61 kilometers southeast of Tarragona, Davao Oriental and at a depth of 30 kilometers.
Two earthquakes also struck the waters off Surigao del Norte on the same day, Phivolcs said.
The first was a magnitude 2 quake at 9:26 a.m. some nine kilometers southwest of General Luna town and a depth of 29 kilometers. An hour and six minutes later, a magnitude 3.2 tremblor struck 22 kilometers southeast of General Luna town, with a depth of focus of 6 kilometers.
On Saturday, Phivolcs recorded a magnitude 5.4 quake in Davao Oriental. The earthquake was downgraded from an initial measurement of magnitude 6.1.
According to Phivolcs, the tremor on Saturday was an aftershock of the magnitude 6.2 quake that struck at 5:45 p.m. on Friday, which was recorded 93 kilometers southeast of Governor Generoso town. (Editor: Jonathan P. Vicente)
