Today, May 22, is the 152nd birth anniversary of musician and patriot Julio Nakpil.
Born in Quiapo, Manila, in 1867, Nakpil was a known composer and member of the Katipunan.
He composed the Katipunan’s official hymn, “Marangal na Dalit ng Katagalugan.”
In 1903, he revised the piece and named it “Salve Patria.”
It was first performed on the eighth death anniversary of Jose Rizal at Manila’s Teatro Zorilla.
Nakpil married Gregoria de Jesus, the widow of Andres Bonifacio, in 1898. He died on Nov. 2, 1960.
