Village councilor shot dead in Manila ambush

MANILA, Philippines — A village councilor in Tondo, Manila was killed in an ambush Wednesday morning.

A report from the Manila Police District’s Raxabago Police Station identified the victim as Ernesto Sibug, 63, village councilor at Barangay 131, Zone 1 in Balut, Tondo.

According to police, Sibug was about to board his Mitsubishi Adventure along Beltran St. corner Pinoy St. when the gunman, on board a black Toyota Fortuner, drove near him and shot him repeatedly.

Sibug was brought to Tondo Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival.

Police said no conduction sticker was seen on the gunman’s vehicle and that its plate number was also not readable from footages taken of the shooting by a nearby closed-circuit television camera. Police have also yet to identify the type of gun used in the shooting.

Investigators are also still trying to identify the gunman as well as establish the motive behind Sibug’s death.  (Editor: Mike U. Frialde)
