Secretary de Jesus reluctant to accept post in Aquino gov’t

MANILA, Philippines –Transportation Secretary Jesus “Ping” de Jesus had no intention of serving out his full six-year term in the administration of President Benigno Aquino III, a senator disclosed on Wednesday.

“He (de Jesus) was a bit hesitant to take the job because of his age,” Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero told reporters.

“There was an understanding that he would not serve out the full term,” he added.

Palawan Representative Antonio Alvarez, who was at the Senate to attend a hearing of the Commission on Appointments, likewise confirmed that de Jesus was “reluctant” to accept the post.

In fact, Alvarez said, he had to convince the Secretary to complete his documents for submission to the Commission.

De Jesus was confirmed by the Commission last February.

To some senators, de Jesus’ resignation was a big loss to the Aquino administration.

“He is a man of an unquestionable reputation. It’s a big loss to the Aquino administration. He’s a good man. Napakabait nyan, and I feel sorry for the Department of Transportation,” Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri said.

Senator Serge Osmena agreed, “Ping is a very important player. I’m sorry to hear that, and I’m hopeful somebody as competent and as experienced as Ping de Jesus will be appointed to the job,” he opined.
