Leyte town mayor loses reelection bid by 1 vote

TACLOBAN CITY — A municipal mayor in Leyte lost his reelection bid by one vote.

Remedio Veloso of the United Nationalist Alliance was proclaimed winner on Monday night after defeating incumbent San Isidro Mayor Susan Ang by just one vote.

Veloso got 8,829 votes while Ang, who ran under the administration’s PDP-Laban, had 8,828 votes.

Ang is seeking her second term as mayor of the fourth class town with an income of about P90 million.

Veloso is the nephew of Rep. Vicente Veloso of Leyte’s 3rd district who was also leading in the canvassing against the former congressman Andy Salvacion.

Last May 8, a gunman strafed the house of Ang, killing municipal administrator Levi Mabini, who just arrived on board a motorcycle.

Ang blamed Veloso for the shooting but her opponent vehemently denied it. (Editor: Leti Boniol)
