Police: CamSur elections ‘peaceful, normal’

CAMARINES SUR, Philippines — The conduct of the 2019 midterm elections here  was “peaceful and normal,” police said.

Camarines Sur chief of police Col. Roderico Roy Jr. said that while there were reports of threats, no one has been reported wounded or harmed since the election period started and until Monday’s polls.

“The elections were peaceful and normal because of our preparation to make sure that the election would be safe,”  Roy said, adding that they are hoping this continues until the winning candidates is proclaimed.

He said that compared to previous elections, this year’s polls were safer.

The towns of Lupi, Libmanan, Caramoan, Siruma, and Tinambac, and the city of Iriga have been declared elections hotspots or areas of immediate concern before the election because of political rivalries and the presence of rebel groups.

The province has received only one case of harassment in San Jose town when reelectionist councilor Roy Fernan Credo and a supporter of the incumbent mayor Antonio Chavez were shot in separate events Sunday.

A week before the elections, reelectionist mayor Garchitorena, his wife, running mate, and driver survived an ambush while on their way home. (Editor: Eden Estopace)
