Villar: Senate will remain independent regardless of members’ party affiliation

MANILA, Philippines — The Senate will remain independent in creating laws regardless of the party affiliation of its members, reelectionist Senator Cynthia Villar said Monday.

“Ang Senate naman maski anong partido lahat may say. Hindi naman kami nakakapasa ng batas na hindi dadaan sa minority (Everyone has a say in the Senate regardless of party affiliation. We cannot pass laws that did not pass through the minority),” Villar said in an ambush interview after voting at the Las Piñas Science High School.

The Senator was asked to comment on the possibility that pro-administration senatorial candidates may dominate the Senate after the midterm polls.

Villar said they need to defend the law to the minority bloc within three days. “If the amendments will make the laws better, why not?” she said in Filipino.

The reelectionist Senator added that the Senate knows what will benefit the country.

“Medyo ang Senate naman miski anong partido, we are really an independent body when it comes to legislation. Alam naman natin kung ano ang maganda sa bansa at pangit sa bansa (The Senate is an independent body when it comes to legislation. We know what is good and bad for our country),” she said.
