Navy officer shot dead in Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines — A Philippine Navy officer based in this city was shot dead by two men riding in tandem on a motorcycle at around 7:51 p.m. on Sunday, May 12, on Veterans Road near the exit of the Zamboanga City Medical Center here.

Brig. Gen. Emmanuel Luis Licup, director of the Zamboanga Peninsula Police Regional Office (PRO-9), identified the victim as Cmdr. Nestor Tenorio Yapit, 53, a native of Pamplona, Cavite City. He was assigned as provost marshal at the Western Mindanao Command.

Yapit died even before he could reach the nearby hospital, Licup said.

As of this writing, police were still investigating the motive for the killing.
