8 mild quakes jolt Mindanao

DIGOS CITY — Eight mild earthquakes jolted separate areas in Mindanao early on Thursday, May 9, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivocs) said.

The bigger two tremblors, each measuring magnitude 4.4, hit the towns of Marihatag in Surigao del Norte and Taragona in Davao Oriental.

Philvocs recorded the Marihatag quake at 2:04 a.m., with the epicenter located some 84 kilometers southeast of the town and at a depth of 16 kilometers.

It was followed by a magnitude 3.6 quake around 2:45 a.m., along the same vicinity in the town.

Earlier at 12:58 a.m., a quake was also recorded in Marihatag, at magnitude 3.8.

Another town in Surigao del Norte also recorded a magnitude 2 quake, which occurred at 2:35 a.m. in Burgos town.

In Taragona, Phivocs said the magnitude 4.4 quake was recorded at 3:05 a.m., with the epicenter located some 90 kilometers southeast of the town and at a depth of 79 kilometers.

A magnitude 3.7 quake also jolted Governor Generoso town, Davao Oriental at 4:04 a.m., Phivolcs said.

Phivocs also recorded a magnitude 3.6 earthquake that struck some 122 kilometers southeast of Sarangani town in Davao Occidental at 5:42 a.m.

Phivocs said all the early quakes in Mindanao were tectonic in origin and no damage was expected.
