Makati seniors to be prioritized for jobs when subway opens
Makati’s senior citizens will be given priority when 10,000 jobs become available with the opening of the P200-billion intracity subway in 2025. In a statement on Thursday, Mayor Abby Binay said that private sector partners of the subway were “amenable to hiring able-bodied senior citizens” as customer service representatives, ushers/porters, platform attendants, administrative assistants and utility workers, among others. “[Like] Japan, we want to keep our elderly residents productive while providing them with a steady source of income for their essential needs,” Binay added. In December, Makati officials and representatives of the private consortium led by Philippine Infradev Holdings held the groundbreaking for the project. Once completed, the 10-station Makati Subway will be able to serve up to 27,000 passengers per hour per direction. —Dexter Cabalza

The clergy of the Diocese of Cubao has warned the faithful against falling victim to those asking for funds supposedly for Bishop Honesto Ongtioco. “It has come to our attention that a text message is currently circulating indicating that our Bishop, Most Rev. Honesto Ongtioco, will be undergoing a triple bypass surgery and that he is asking for funds,” it said in a statement. “There is no truth [to this]. We advise the faithful of Cubao to refrain from giving any money in case you receive such a request for funds for the said purpose,” it added. —Tina G. Santos
