NGCP extends red alert status for Luzon grid

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has extended the red alert status for Luzon grid until 11 p.m. Thursday.

According to NGCP, available power capacity is currently at 9,506 megawatts while peak demand is at 9,580 megawatts, leaving a shortage of 74 megawatts.

Red alert has been extended until 11PM, and yellow alert from 11PM-12AM by NGCP for the Luzon grid.

With this, NGCP said rotational brownouts will be likely in parts of Metro Manila, Tarlac, and Quirino from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.

“Schedule may be cancelled if system condition improves, such as if actual demand falls below projections,” NGCP said in a separate advisory. 

NGCP initially placed Luzon grid under red alert status from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.

NGCP said once the red alert status has been lifted, Luzon grid will then be placed under yellow alert from 11 p.m. until midnight. 

A “red alert” is “a system condition when there is zero ancillary service (AS) or a generation deficiency exists” while a “yellow alert” means “a grid’s reserve power—the difference between supply and demand—is below the required level,” NGCP explained.

Parts of Luzon, including portions of Metro Manila, experienced rotational brownouts on Thursday, April 25, due to thinning power supply. /kga
