Joavan holds feeding program

IT WAS a different image altogether.

Joavan Fernandez yesterday ladled out bowls of hot pospas (congee) to indigent children in Talisay City, a change from the more frequent public scene of him being arrested by police or sitting in jail.

The controversial son of Talisay Mayor Socrates Fernadez said this wasn’t his first time to spearhead a feeding program.

At least 200 children were fed in the joint project with the mayor’s office and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

“Dili man ko pareha anang uban nga magpa-feeding dayun pero naa diay tumong. Kaning ako pagtabang lang jud ni pinaagi sab sa akong amahan (I’m not like other people who do feeding programs with an agenda. Mine is to help people through my father,)” Joavan said.

Joavan said he had promised to change for the better after he was recently arrested twice for various charges.

Joavan said the feeding program was just the start of his transformation.

Tangke barangay captain Perla Cabanes said she was thankful to Joavan and Mayor Fernandez for the feeding program.

Tangke resident Tessie Cabando said she was happy to see Joavan serving food to the children.

Other residents expressed hope that Joavan would continue doing good deeds and no longer disturb the peace of Talisay residents with his repeated brushes with the law.

Senior Supt. Melvin Buenafe, who offered to mentor Joavan, attended the feeding program.

“This is a good a sign. He should be given a chance to change since each person has a good side,” said Buenafe, chief of the Cebu City police./CORRESPONDENT GABRIEL C. BONJOC
